Walking Tournanment with Fitness Trackers

(Edit this general description for your challenge)

The Walking Tournament with Fitness Trackers will promote wellness by encouraging participants to walk more often during the day. A Walking Tournament is an elimination style tournament which consists of a series of one-week rounds beginning with the seed round. During the seed round, teams are ranked based on the number of steps entered into the system. At the end of the seed round the top 64, 32, 16, 8, or 4 teams move on to the next round where they compete head-to-head with the winning team advancing to the next round. These rounds continue until a winner can be determined. In the event of a tie, the team with the higher ranking will advance to the next round.

Participants may use a supported activity tracking device to record the number of daily steps taken and transmit this number to the ChallengeRunner.com system. The totals of those steps are then compared against one another and a real-time leaderboard is made available.

In order to receive data from tracking devices, each participant must first install the appropriate software and create an account on the activity tracker's website. Every participant must then authorize ChallengeRunner.com to capture individual data as follows:

After logging in, the participant must click the Profile link at the top of the home page and then click the Authorize link. On the tracker website shown the user must enter their ID and Password they created when they first registered the device.

Once the device is authorized, the user must ensure that they connect their device to the activity tracker's website at least once per day to sync data.

NOTE: Apple Health and Samsung Health are enabled using the ChallengeRunner iOS and Android smartphone apps respectively.

This challenge will run for 6 weeks and the winning team will be awarded a prize.

The Walking Challenge with Fitness Trackers has the following characteristics:

  • In the tournament bracket, each team is able to see where they stand in relation to other teams using real names.
  • Participants are allowed to enter up to 20,000 steps each day.
  • Devices should be synced every day. This is especially true on the last day of a given round since only the round winners advance to the next round.
  • Although activity trackers are supported, they are not required. Participants may enter their own data using the ChallengeRunner website or ChallengeRunner smartphone apps.
